Ervand Kochar (1899-1979) was an artist and sculptor whose creative heritage remains one of the remarkable phenomena of 20th-century modern art. Born in Tbilisi and later finding his artistic home in Paris, Kochar played a pivotal role in the development of the avant-garde art movement. During his 13-year stay in Paris from 1923 to 1936, he actively participated in numerous prestigious exhibitions, receiving the highest accolades from critics and earning a place alongside artists such as Picasso, Brack, Arp, Leger, Miro, and Delaunay. Kochar's most significant achievement during this period was the establishment of "Painting in Space" (Peinture dans L'Espace), a concept that was acknowledged as one of the most notable accomplishments of the avant-garde movement by art critics. In 1936, Kochar decided to return to Soviet Armenia, only to find himself trapped behind the "Iron Curtain" during the Stalin Era. Despite experiencing imprisonment, persecution, and creative isolation, Kochar's artistic spirit remained unbroken. Mentally, he continued to live and create as if still in Paris, bringing the energy and approaches of modern art to his homeland. The Ervand Kochar Museum was founded in 1984 in Maestro's former studio. Today, the museum serves as an avant-garde research center in the region exploring possibilities for engaging human perception through innovative art and technology.
