Born in 1996 in the village of Betkuduk, Kazakhstan, Sayan Baigaliyev pursued a specialisation in easel painting at a boarding and technical school within the Kazakh National Academy of Arts (KazNAI) named after T.K. Zhurgenov in Amaty. He further honed his skills at the contemporary art workshop led by Aidan Salakhova. His experiences include museum training in Paris, and he was awarded the Jackson Painting Prize in 2021 in the Scenes from Everyday Life category, London. Baigaliyev was also a finalist in the 18th Arte Laguna Prize in Italy and was featured in Kazakhstan’s Forbes 30 under 30 list. His works have been exhibited internationally at prominent art fairs such as VOLTA in Basel and ASIA NOW in Paris.
Sayan Baigaliev delves into the exploration of compositional, coloristic and plastic techniques for constructing space. By distancing painting from the traditional picture plane, he transforms it into a substance that stands on its own. His work focuses on the transformation of domestic spaces, where doorways and sectional divisions compress rooms and objects into thick impasto reliefs. These elements unfold into complex visual perspectives, creating a blend of mobility and fluidity that extends in all directions, reflecting his nomadic sensibility.
